THE REVELATION OF GOD SERIES: ELOHIM

INTRODUCTION

The Hebrew word Elohim is commonly used for God in the Old Testament. The word Elohim (El-oh-heem) is in its plural form used in a singular sense, depicting God the father and God the son. Just like the words Cherub (singular) and Cherubim (plural), also Seraph (singular) and Seraphim (plural), the word Eloh (singular) is translated linguistically as “supreme”, “almighty” or “all-powerful” and Elohim (plural) which means the same.

God is called by many names and each of these names reveals His unique attributes. In other words, God’s name is derived from His unique nature. For instance, 1 Samuel 2:3 described God as omniscient i.e. all-knowing which reveals the uniqueness of His person compared to any mortal on earth.

Talk no more so very proudly, let no arrogance come from your mouth; For the LORD is the God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.

1 Samuel 2:3

The above prayer which happens to be a testimony of truth was a deep revelation of God by reason of intimacy with Yahweh. Hannah could pick in the spirit realm that truly God is a God of knowledge. This testimony did not come on a platter of gold. She passed through some hard times in childbearing which opened her up to a dimension of God that no one would have been able to explain to her if she had not gone through the process.

If you say God is all-knowing, you are not saying it because you first and foremost believed it, but because it is known and proven either from scriptures or personal intimacy with the Holy Spirit and then you can now testify of it. This means that there is now a solid assurance of a dimension of God that we did not know before, but now we know it, have proven it to be true, and can truly testify of it.

The beautiful thing about this is that no man on earth, or even angels in heaven, can measure up to God’s unique attributes.

God is in His own class and He has the right to be put in His class. Suppose you are a king in your domain and you discover that your kingdom is in a serious pandemonium, yet you cannot find an immediate solution to the pandemonium you are facing, it is because built in your fabric, there is no single tool that can deal with the situation with immediate alacrity – until you turn to someone higher in authority, power and wisdom to resolve your dilemma. Only then do you realize that there is a gap you cannot fill – a deficiency in the human fabric that only someone higher up can fill.

This is why God is revered. In Him, all things consist. God is Omniscient – He is all-wise; He knows all things. God is Omnipresent – He is all-present; He is everywhere, at all times, in every way. God is Omnipotent – He is all-powerful; all power belongs to Him. Elohim is the height, width, breadth and very depth that frames, governs and determines the spiritual, cosmological and ontological fate of all that was, is and is to come. There is none like Him, neither will there be any like Him. Elohim symbolizes His supremacy and His mightiness over everything.

This name happened to be the first name of God in the creation story. Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” In the above scripture, the word translated “God” is the Hebrew word “Elohim”. That is the plurality of God: The Father; The Son; The Holy Spirit in a sublime singular sense.

The Godhood presents Himself as plural in the Hebrew name Elohim. And since I bear the Image of God, it occurred to me that God is saying, “There is more to me than the world is yet to see and experience.”
